Objectives of the BSc(Software Engineering) Program

The objectives of the BSc(Software Engineering) program are to provide the knowledge, skills and attributes that should be achieved by the graduates for a successful career. The program is designed to:

To produce graduates who are able to use sound computational principles and techniques in solving real world problems across different application areas.
To produce graduates who are capable of applying efficient and effective scientific approach and tools in designing and building high quality computer programs.
To produce graduates who are capable to plan, analyze, design and implement a large scale software projects with a quality software projects and products.
To produce graduates who are able to communicate effectively across different range of contexts and audiences.
To produce graduates who are able to independently conduct lifelong learning and adapt readily to changing situations.

Software Architectures: An Integrative and Non-Mainstream Approach
Prof. Dr.-Ing. Dr. h.c. Manfred Nagl, Software Engineering, RWTH Aachen University

For modeling Software Architectures there exist many, nearly disjoint approaches in the literature: OO and UML, dataflow architectures in the embedded community, different architecture styles, architectures in data base systems / information management systems, and architectures in the modularity community.

The talk gives arguments and ideas for an integrative approach which tries to incorporate all above and different approaches.

Especially, an architecture modeling approach has to be applicable for practical problems as reverse engineering, reengineering, and maintenance in general, where the latter often means extension and integration of existing systems.

The architecture approach unifies good ideas, all coming from programming languages: functional and data abstraction, object and type units, locality, layers within architectures, classification and similarities, subsystems, and genericity.

It, especially, points out that there is not only one but a series of architectures, from an abstract form to a concrete one, the latter describing the delivered system to a customer with a lot of specifics, like distribution, used infrastructure, efficiency transformations, used available components.

Abstract:

From human readable web pages, to formal semantics of linked data and the emergent social semantics of tags and folksonomies, we routinely look to the web as both a source of information and a place to put data. However, the web is also a locus of action: users want to get things done, whether booking a hotel room, or editing an online spreadsheet.
The boundaries between web and desktop interaction are blurring. On the one hand, the traditional PC desktop is now inhabited by widgets such as the Mac Dashboard, web fast-download apps such as Java Web Start or Adobe Air, and expanded browser functionality such as Chrome. On the other hand, computation and applications that once were part of the desktop are now hosted on the web (for example word-processing with Google Docs), and various technologies enable web applications to function even when users have no connectivity to the internet. Furthermore, in emerging markets such as India and China, this convergence will be total, as the sole computing experience for many will be through mobile devices and predominantly the web.
This talk will explore the premise that this emerging web will be a place of action, not just information, and that the purpose of global data is ultimately to serve human needs.

The ubiquitous nature of software systems and the increasing dependency of individuals, organizations and government on such systems highlight the importance of software engineering. Most efforts in software engineering aim at improving the methods, techniques and tools in order to facilitate the development, operation, and maintenance of the high quality software systems.

The Software Engineering Department is a fast growing department with an inspiring academic programmes and an outstanding research record. It aims to enhance the state of research and practice in the field of software engineering. To achieve this aim, we make a continuous effort toward the 3Qs strategic objectives i.e. Quality Academic Programmes, Quality Research, and Quality People.

Regarding our academic programs, we furnish our students with the generic and technical skills required for a first-class software engineer. To increase the market potential of our graduates, we also embed professional certifications relevant to industries and adapt IEEE/ACM Curriculum Guidelines for Software Engineering.
